Kawasaki Heavy Industries has achieved a significant milestone by delivering a next-generation LPG-powered gas carrier designed for the transportation of both liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and ammonia. The vessel, named Eneos Gunjo, was officially transferred to Eneos Ocean Corporation in late September 2023, representing a significant advancement in the industry's shift towards more sustainable maritime practices. Kawasaki has successfully launched its eighth LPG-fueled vessel, marking the 72nd addition to its LPG carrier portfolio, thereby solidifying its position as a leader in sustainable shipbuilding.

The vessel features a dual-fuel propulsion system that utilizes a Kawasaki–MAN B&W 6G60ME-C10.5-LGIP engine, enabling it to operate efficiently on LPG. This facilitates a notable reduction in sulfur oxide and carbon dioxide emissions when compared to traditional marine fuels, thereby ensuring adherence to the IMO’s rigorous SOx regulations and EEDI Phase 3 standards. The design incorporates advanced emissions control technologies to comply with NOx Tier III requirements, demonstrating a thorough commitment to environmental stewardship.

Eneos Gunjo distinguishes itself through its capability to transport both LPG and ammonia concurrently in separate tanks. This innovative approach to cargo handling flexibility improves transport efficiency while maintaining the vessel’s external dimensions, ensuring compatibility with current LPG port infrastructure. The ship has been strategically designed with future adaptability in mind, allowing for conversion to ammonia fuel propulsion, a concept that has already received approval from classification authorities.

This delivery aligns with Kawasaki's overarching strategy aimed at decarbonizing maritime logistics. The company is expanding its fleet with LPG-powered and ammonia-capable vessels while also leading advancements in liquid hydrogen carriers. In early 2023, Kawasaki successfully delivered Axis River, an LPG-fueled ammonia carrier, highlighting its ongoing dedication to offering adaptable and low-emission transportation solutions.

The Eneos Gunjo represents a significant advancement in vessel design. This statement encapsulates the current trajectory of the shipping industry. The integration of cleaner propulsion systems, dual-fuel capabilities, and adaptable cargo designs illustrates the industry's progression towards achieving environmental objectives while ensuring operational efficiency remains a priority.
