Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) has partnered with global shipping giant EVERGREEN to introduce advanced virtual reality (VR) training solutions at the EVERGREEN Seafarer Training Center (ESTC). This collaboration aims to enhance seafarer preparedness for operating complex, eco-friendly equipment on EVERGREEN's fleet of 16,500 TEU methanol dual-fuel container ships.
The implementation of SHI's VR solutions allows trainees to virtually access and interact with critical ship systems before setting foot onboard. These immersive simulations are tailored to replicate essential operations such as inspections in engine rooms, bunkering procedures, and responses to emergency situations like fuel leaks or onboard fires. By simulating these environments, seafarers can become proficient in equipment handling and crisis management in a controlled, risk-free space.
As global environmental regulations grow stricter and the industry sees a surge in orders for eco-friendly ships, the need for robust, technology-driven training programs has become increasingly urgent. SHI's VR solutions directly address this need by leveraging 3D design data to build fully interactive digital replicas of ship systems. This eliminates the necessity of physical presence onboard for routine training, significantly reducing costs and logistical constraints.
One of the key benefits of this initiative is its contribution to operational safety and cost-efficiency. The VR platform enables repetitive, scenario-based training, allowing seafarers to rehearse emergency protocols and fine-tune their response strategies. Additionally, it minimizes the risk of equipment misuse, helping to prevent costly repairs and unexpected downtimes.
Dong-yeon Lee, Vice President and Director of SHI’s Ship and Offshore Research Institute, emphasized the strategic importance of this innovation. He stated, “VR solutions that are tailored to customer needs will play a crucial role in enhancing the operational stability of eco-friendly ships. Samsung Heavy Industries will develop a range of customized solutions by leveraging our technical expertise in VR.”
This forward-thinking approach positions SHI and EVERGREEN at the forefront of maritime innovation, combining sustainability with advanced technology to meet the evolving demands of global shipping. As the industry continues its transition toward greener fuels and systems, VR-based training will likely become an essential component of modern seafarer education.
