Towngas and CIMC ENRIC have signed a strategic partnership agreement to jointly accelerate the development of green methanol and hydrogen energy in Hong Kong. This collaboration marks a major step in Hong Kong’s push toward cleaner energy alternatives and aligns with regional and national carbon neutrality goals.
Towngas, a pioneer in green fuel innovation, is the first Chinese company to obtain both ISCC EU and ISCC PLUS certifications for its large-scale green methanol operations. The company has developed a complete supply chain network for green methanol, covering feedstock sourcing, production, logistics, and distribution. CIMC ENRIC, a leading clean energy and maritime equipment provider, brings advanced engineering capabilities and project experience to the partnership. Together, the two companies aim to establish a strong and scalable framework for expanding the adoption of green methanol across industrial and transportation sectors.
In addition to green methanol, the agreement includes collaboration across the full hydrogen energy value chain. This includes hydrogen extraction, purification, storage, and its application in areas such as mobility and urban energy infrastructure. Towngas has already integrated hydrogen into its operations, with 50 percent of the gas supply in Hong Kong currently composed of hydrogen, distributed through a 3,700 kilometer underground pipeline network. The partnership with CIMC ENRIC will enhance Towngas’s ability to deploy hydrogen solutions for electric vehicle charging, distributed energy systems, and industrial heating.
The strategic importance of this partnership is twofold. First, it demonstrates how certified green fuels such as methanol can be scaled with international engineering support and robust local infrastructure. Second, it sets a precedent for how hydrogen can be integrated into existing energy networks to meet rising demand for low-carbon alternatives. With Hong Kong’s role as an international logistics and finance hub, this initiative is expected to serve as a model for other regions in Asia exploring similar pathways toward decarbonization.
This development is aligned with China’s dual carbon goals of peaking emissions by 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2060, along with Hong Kong’s own 2050 climate targets. For Towngas, the collaboration represents a continuation of its strategy to lead in green fuel innovation, while CIMC ENRIC strengthens its presence in the urban clean energy landscape.
From an industry standpoint, this partnership illustrates the increasing relevance of cross-sector collaboration in the clean fuel transition. It highlights the growing importance of certification, scalable infrastructure, and engineering innovation in unlocking new market opportunities for both hydrogen and methanol. For investors, policymakers, and technology providers, this initiative points to strong momentum behind clean energy investments in the Greater Bay Area and across Asia.
